Sewing room overload

I walked in here this morning and was a bit overwhelmed..there is stuff everywhere. So I decided if I record a kind of list of things to do here, it might motivate me to get on with slowly chipping away at the mess.
Stuff as you go in the door

Two quilts that have come from a lady who has had to down size and had donated all her quilts, tops and some fabric to go to oncology quilts. Underneath that is a quilt top made with six inch squares, I decided it was a good idea to sew them together last Friday night, now it needs backing and batting and quilting.

This was a huge quilt top given to me by a friend, her mother made it and it was found after her mother passed, my friend wants it to go to the oncology ward. Jill very kindly divided the quilt top in half and unpicked. My job now is to give them the gray borders, applique it in place, (even pinning in place would be good at the moment!!  ) and get them ready for quilting.

This tub contains fabric I have been given to make oncology quilts, love the pink fabric on top, am thinking of a whole fabric quilt for that one as it is stunning fabric. The orange bag contains strips, it seems to be the same level, despite many strip blocks being made out of it!

One day I am going to get this chair clear so I can actually sit in it!!! At the moment there is an unfinished quilt top on it and another quilt awaiting quilting...poor thing has been waiting for over a year! Oops just seen another unfinished quilt top on the back of the chair!

Oh dear!! Fabric to put away, patterns to put in folders, a quilt top and a container with One Block Wednesday blocks I need to get trimmed and sewn together.

But some POSITIVE news, Susan of Susan's Sewing Space used this fabric as quilt backing and I commented on it as there is a Chowchow included with the dogs!! Happy smile!

Chows are not often found on fabric so Susan very kindly sent me some, I think this will become a tote bag one day!

Mmmm yes well, I though my room was under control but obviously not. I am going to try and do one thing a day to get it back in order. Just take baby steps and see how I go. I was very lucky to inherit (read that as say I was having!!) this room when we moved here, the previous owner (male) had this room as his office/study so it has wonderful shelving, which you can see I have filled!! Today I want to get the tram lady up on the wall. That will open up a little space there.

I have been slowly plugging away at the knitted rectangles, the top 5 rows are all joined up, I just realised yesterday I didn't have the rows straight and am missing 2 rectangles on the bottom row, so will have to go search for something to go there.

I have just finished reading this book, an amazing story about a childhood in a devout Mormon family, controlled by a father with bipolar. It was gripping and very hard to put down.
Ok enough waffling on, I am off to do something about the sewing room!
Wish me luck!!

  1. Oh Sue I just keep peering at my screen looking at all the lovely fabrics & projects & works-in-progress in your sewing room. You are indeed SO lucky my friend - to have a lovely big room. Its funny you should mention that book as I saw it in a catalogue today & thought it looked interesting.

  3. Hello Sue,

Best wishes for the sewing room tidy up. You are so brave to post them, I bet there are a few people thinking I am in the same boat. Have fun tidying up. Don't make it too hard for yourself. I have just got back from the local library and actually saw that book. Will have to get it next time.

    Happy days.

  5. I know the feeling well. If you nibble away at it you will get there. You just have to slow down the flow of incoming donation quilts to let you catch up a bit. Good luck with it.

  10. Good luck with the tidying and organising. That puppy fabric is super cute and I'm envious of your book shelves. Are they all crafty books?

  11. I can so relate. I too have a chair I can't sit in. Every time I clear the seat it, somehow, gets covered by something else. I need that chair to do hand quilting at the frame. I was given two armoires for my sewing room and since then the room is total mess. Good luck with your goals. ;^)

  13. I feel much better about my quilt space mess now. Thanks for showing me I'm not the only one! LOL Mine has spread to the whole house, though. For reasons. I disagree with Lin. The smaller my space, the MORE I get messy. LOL

I thought the author's name looked familiar, and when you described the book I realized why. She's been on news and all kinds of programs over here. I wish more people realized that her family is not typical of LDS families, but her book gets tagged a lot as though it is.

  15. It is hard keeping a room tidy when one has so many projects. Creativity requires lots of space. That book is now on my list.

  16. This will keep you busy and occupied in a very good way. You may even find some long lost treasure. Who knows! What a cute Chowchow on the fabric. The kogo blanket is looking great.
